Concourse D, Main Terminal, Charlotte Douglass International Airport, North Carolina

Introduction

This is my review of the American Express Centurion Lounge near Gates D & E in Charlotte’s Douglas International Airport.

I’ve been to quite a few Centurion Lounges, such as LaGuardia, Seattle, Las Vegas and Philadelphia, and this is one of my favorites.

Opening Hours

The lounge is open daily between 05:30 and 22:30,

Entry Conditions

The lounge is open to Platinum American Express holders.

It may also be open to other US-based Amex card holders, but as far as I am aware for UK-based holders, it’s only the Platinum that gets lounge access.

How to Get There

Heading towards Concourse D, after the travellators you’ll see a left turning to go to Concourse E.

Make a left towards Concourse E, and keep a look out to the right. Here you’ll see the (slightly hidden) elevator, which takes you up to the lounge.

Layout

Centurion Lounges are always great in their layouts and decor – this was no exception!

This isn’t a huge lounge, and certainly missing some of the features that LaGuardia and Las Vegas has.

There is a bunch of casual seating overlooking the apron of the airport. This included a large wooden desk for working, and a small printer.

One of the features I really like about the Centurion Lounges is their ‘phone rooms’. Unfortunately, the ‘fair usage’ policy isn’t one adopted by all – especially on this day! In fact two of the people occupying the rooms were neither on calls, nor working…….for well over an hour!

There is also a dining area close to the bar, but it seems I forgot to take a picture of it!

Food and Drink

Drinks

Coffee and water is self-service from stations dotted around the lounge.

Alternatively, there is an extensive bar serving anything you could want!

For some reason, I forgot to grab a picture of the bar menu – but it’s generally the same as the LaGuardia Lounge – picture below!

Food

All Centurion Lounges (at least that I’ve experienced) have self-service food.

Food on offer consisted of hot mains, cookies, salad, chicken, beef and rice.

In general terms, I think Centurion Lounges offer decent food – but it’s not quite as good as other airport lounges, which can offer food service to the table!

Wifi

Naturally, the wifi was extremely fast and reliable – was getting about 35mps up and down.

Showers

Having previously visited the Admirals Clubs, which don’t offer showers, I was glad this one did as I was flying back to Heathrow!

I believe there are two showers which are booked at the front desk. A few amenities are offered – but never deodorant!

Anyway, my shower was hot and the the bathroom in fair condition. This is the first time I’ve taken a shower in a Centurion Lounge, and I had no complaints!

Conclusion

This is a great lounge, and a welcome addition to CLT – especially with the showers!

I do enjoy a Centurion Lounge, and the space, food, drink and showers were all great. The only snag is the phone room hoggers – but that’s not something the lounge can fix!

  1. As with most national/international brands, they underestimate the size of the Charlotte market as well as the volume of travelers at CLT who have Platinum Cards (likely believing most passengers are coming from small towns with 50k people who don’t know what a Platinum Card is–as is typical for NYC based companies). The only major issue with this lounge is that it is way too small. I hold a Platinum Card and an AA Admirals Club membership. I am happy to see AMEX invested at CLT and was pleased that they opened the lounge, but each time I’ve visited it has either been packed to the point of nowhere to sit and/or the line for a drink at the bar is 10-15 deep. Most of the time, however, there is a waitlist to even get in (elevator is packed up and down and is extremely slow) to the point where it’s not worth it to even try anymore. I am seriously considering going back to the Green Card as I am not sure what advantage having lounge access for CLT is worth. Just like AA–AMEX needs to (1) double the size of this lounge or (2) start restricting access to those who spend >$150k a year on the card, or risk a lot of their largest spenders dropping to a much lower fee card or just dropping AMEX altogether.
